What qualifications do I need to become a Vehicle Technician?
While businesses often prefer Vehicle Technicians with experience, this can also be an entry level role. You can gain practical experience through apprenticeship programmes, work placements or as a brand-new Vehicle Technician you can receive on-the-job training. More experienced Vehicle Technicians may find work as Senior Technicians.
While there are no formal educational requirements for Senior Vehicle Technicians, many businesses require educational standards. Many employers ask for candidates who have completed at least an apprenticeship. Some employers also ask for applicants with relevant NVQs or SVQs in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair.
What levels of Vehicle Technician are there?
There are several common levels (which can differ by employer/manufacturer) however qualifications are typically transferrable between employers. Examples include:
Who does a Vehicle Technician report to?
A Vehicle Technician reports to a Workshop Supervisor/Controller or Aftersales Manager. These professionals tell Vehicle Technicians which vehicles they are working on. Workshop Supervisors/Controllers or Aftersales Managers often have a high amount of knowledge, so when working as a Vehicle Technician, they can support the Vehicle Technicians to diagnose and treat complex vehicle issues.
How much does a Vehicle Technicians get paid?
Typically, Vehicle Technicians can expect to earn between £22,000 and £32,000, to Diagnostic Technician between £26,000 and £38,000, and Master Technicians up to £45,000. More advanced and specialist Vehicle Technicians can now earn up to £60,000 per year in some cases.
What days and hours will I work?
Working hours and days can vary. Commonly, Vehicle Technicians can expect to work standard industry hours, Monday to Friday. However, they may also be on a rota if the workshop is open on weekends, or in the evenings. Overtime may also be necessary to meet deadlines. Part-time work may be possible.
We know that as a Vehicle Technician from another manufacturer you will be highly skilled but may have little understanding of the specifics of our Volkswagen Group products, systems and processes. This is not a problem.
New Vehicle Technicians can easily navigate through our Volkswagen Group Brand training plans in a relatively short space of time. Our training pathways are blended with a mixture of remote and face to face learning focussing on the systems and processes that are unique to Volkswagen Group. All technicians start at our first level of qualification which can be completed in as little as 12 weeks and is packed with everything needed to carry out the role in the early months. Following successful qualification there are options to quickly move on to further advanced levels of qualification.
If you have gained a qualification level with any other Volkswagen Group Brand, there will be elements of your training that we will recognise and you will not be required to complete them again. You will automatically be enrolled onto the relevant Brand Cross over Training Plans starting with Vehicle Service Technician which is all e-learning and accessible on-line at any time and can be completed in a very short space of time. The cross over training plans cover the Brand specific requirements of the qualification level. On successful completion, you will be become certified at that level.
